Canada to Welcome 431,645 Permanent Residents in 2022
Canada’s immigration levels plan aims to welcome 431,645 newcomers in 2022. This is an increase of over 20,000 from Canada’s previous record-breaking targets for the year, the highest level ever targeted in Canadian history.
Included in this total, Canada plans to target 241,850 economic newcomers, including:
- 55,900 Federal Skilled Workers, Federal Skilled Trades, and Canadian Experience Class candidates
- 83,500 Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates
Minister says draws for skilled workers to resume in “near future”
So far, most of the Express Entry draws have been for PNP candidates only. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has not invited CEC candidates since September 2021. Moreover, we haven’t seen an FSWP draw since December 2020.
Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser told business leaders in a webinar that IRCC would resume draws for skilled workers “in the near future.”
Although the immigration minister said there was no announcement on when skilled worker draws would resume, he said that Express Entry would start to look more normal in the coming years.
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is an online system that Canada uses to manage applications for permanent residence under 3 programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): skilled workers who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade. Applicants are normally young, highly educated, have some work experience, and know English or French.
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): skilled workers with foreign work experience who want to immigrate to Canada permanently. Applicants in this group are normally licensed plumbers, welders, etc.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC): skilled workers who have at least one year of full-time Canadian work experience in a professional capacity.
What to do if you receive an invitation to apply?
If you were invited to apply for permanent residence, you’ll get a message in your account telling you:
- Which program you’ve been invited to apply for
- What to do next
Also, you’ll need to show proof of the information you gave in your EE profile. IRCC will assess whether the information you submit in your application is different from what was in your profile.
